Why Is My Water Bill Suddenly So High? (And What It Usually Means)

You opened your water bill and did a double take

You opened your water bill, did a double take, and checked the name on the envelope to make sure it was actually yours. We get it. A water bill that doubles or triples out of nowhere is unsettling, and your first thought is usually “did I really use that much?”

Most of the time, the answer is no. You didn’t suddenly start taking hour long showers. Something in your home is using water without you knowing about it, and the good news is that it’s almost always findable and fixable. Here are the usual suspects we see across Nashville, Franklin, and Murfreesboro homes, roughly in order of how often they’re the culprit.

1. A running toilet is the number one offender

A toilet that runs even a little can waste hundreds of gallons a day, and it often does it quietly. The flapper at the bottom of the tank wears out over time and stops sealing, so water trickles from the tank into the bowl around the clock.

Want to test it yourself? Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait 15 minutes without flushing, and check the bowl. If the color shows up in the bowl, your flapper is leaking. It’s a cheap part and an easy fix, and it’s worth checking first because it’s so common.

2. A hidden leak somewhere in the house

This is the one that worries people, and rightly so. A leak inside a wall, under a slab, or in a crawl space can run for weeks before you notice any signs. Things to watch for:

  • Warm spots on the floor (a sign of a hot water line leak under a slab)
  • The sound of running water when everything is turned off
  • Damp drywall, bubbling paint, or a musty smell
  • Cracks in the foundation or unexplained shifting

If you suspect a hidden leak, don’t wait it out. Water damage compounds fast, and what starts as a small line leak can turn into a much bigger repair. This is exactly the kind of thing worth having someone come look at.

3. Your water heater is leaking or failing

Water heaters don’t last forever (usually 8 to 12 years for a tank model), and as they age the tank can develop slow leaks or the relief valve can start releasing water. If you see water pooling near the base of the unit or hear it running more than it should, that’s your sign.

4. Irrigation and outdoor spigots

If your bill spiked in spring or summer, your sprinkler system or an outdoor faucet is a strong candidate. A cracked sprinkler head, a stuck valve, or a hose bib that drips can quietly pour water into your yard for days. Walk your system while it’s running and look for soggy patches that shouldn’t be there.

5. You genuinely used more water (and that’s okay)

Sometimes there’s a real reason. Houseguests, a new ice maker, filling a pool, a kid who discovered long baths. If you can point to a clear cause, your bill should settle back down next cycle. The key is being able to rule out everything above first.

How to track it down before you panic

Here’s a quick check anyone can do. Make sure no water is running anywhere in the house, including the ice maker and irrigation. Then go find your water meter (usually near the street or in a basement) and watch the little leak indicator dial or triangle. If it’s moving while everything is off, water is going somewhere it shouldn’t.

That single test tells you whether you’ve got a leak or just a high usage month, and it saves you a lot of guesswork.

When it’s time to call someone

A running toilet flapper, you can probably handle on a Saturday. But if your meter is spinning with everything off, you’re seeing warm spots on the floor, or you just can’t find the source, that’s where it pays to bring in a pro with leak detection equipment. We can pinpoint a leak without tearing up half your house guessing, and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a quick repair or something bigger.
